NAIT levies consultation begins

We're inviting feedback on proposed NAIT levy increases to help fund improvements to the NAIT system.

Cow eating grassNational Animal Identification and Tracing (NAIT) Scheme manager, NAIT Limited, has begun formal consultation with farmers and collection agents (meat processors and tag manufacturers) on proposed increases to:

  • NAIT levies
  • Crown and deer industry contributions.

In 2012 the NAIT tag levy was $1.10 and was reduced to $0.90 in 2014. Similarly, the slaughter levy was $1.35 and was reduced to $0.50 per head.

We propose to increase the tag levy to $1.35 and slaughter levy to $1.77 to enable us to continue the work we have started, the work that farmers and industry asked us to deliver.

To ensure funding levels remain at an appropriate level, the NAIT levies will be reviewed at three-yearly intervals.

We believe these increases are the minimum needed to deliver a traceability system that's easy to use, and able to perform in a disease outbreak.

Submissions on the proposal are due by 5pm 25 February 2022.
