Proposed National Aerial Operations Plan open for feedback

We're inviting feedback on the proposed 2023 National Aerial Operation Plan for the TBfree disease management programme.

Possums are the wildlife source of TB infection in cattle and deer in New Zealand, so possum control is a key activity for the TBfree programme, alongside livestock TB testing and animal movement control.

The careful use of biodegradable 1080 to control possums has been a key tool in significantly reducing TB infection in cattle and deer herds.  This essential work controls possum numbers to stop TB cycling in wildlife and reduces the threat to New Zealand’s primary industries, the heart of our export economy.

The feedback period runs until 30 September and there are a number of ways to make a submission, including writing to OSPRI, calling or making submission.

Foot-and-mouth – Declare non-NAIT animals

Vigilance is key when it comes to foot-and-mouth disease. In addition to ensuring your NAIT account accurately reflects the NAIT animals at your NAIT location/s, you need to declare non-NAIT animals too. It is a legal requirement to provide the non-NAIT declaration by 31 July.

Declaring your non-NAIT animals gives us a better idea of where animals of different species are being farmed together, which is essential in managing disease outbreaks that cross between species and supports disease management and national biosecurity.

Send electronic ASDs today

All farmers are encouraged to sign up to MyOSPRI, our new online customer portal to send electronic Animal Status Declarations for both farm-to-farm and farm-to-meat processor movements.

Sending electronic ASDs helps reduce on-farm administration and recording data online makes it easier to trace animals. Having a reliable animal tracing system plays a vital role in limiting the impact of a disease outbreak, like FMD.

Update on migrating your eASDs

If you were using the eASD system, you’ll know that we experienced a technical glitch when migrating your historic eASDs over to MyOSPRI. The team are getting ready to start the process again, and from Monday 8 August a slower migration process will begin, over a longer period of time. This means you can expect to see a bit of activity in your MyOSPRI account. Your historic eASDs can still be viewed in the old eASD system, which will be decommissioned once all eASDs have been successfully moved over.

Multiple locations under one NAIT number?

Farming at multiple locations (within a 10km radius) and using one NAIT number?

Did you know it is a legal requirement to add all the land parcels you are farming within the NAIT number. For example, you have a run-off block within 10km of your main farm, both land parcels need to be captured in NAIT. This is a biosecurity measure that enables us to locate all areas where animals may be or may have been in the event of a disease outbreak.
