As part of our TBfree programme we deliver our pest control operations through a framework of TB management areas (TMAs). TMAs are areas with known TB infection in livestock or wildlife. Each TMA has a specific TB control plan designed to eradicate TB as effectively as possible.
The Pisa TMA has a history of TB infections in the wildlife from early 1990s. Ferrets and feral pigs inhabit this area and infection is common. Over the past 20 years, domestic herds were frequently infected. The possum control during this period successfully decreased the number of infected cattle herds.
The most recent infected wildlife was a ferret collected at Luggate during surveys in 2012.
