As part of our TBfree programme we deliver our pest control operations through a framework of TB management areas (TMAs). TMAs are areas with known TB infection in livestock and wildlife. Each TMA has a specific TB control plan designed to eradicate TB as effectively as possible.
The Pisa TMA covers 126,704ha and encompasses the Pisa and Criffel Mountains that extend from Queenstown in the south through to Wanaka and Mount Roy in the northeast.
The landscape is a mixture of high country tussock and scrub together with lowland improved farmland. It supports a mixture of intensive and extensive farming.
TB was established in wildlife throughout the Pisa TMA from the early 1990s. Ferrets and feral pigs are widely distributed and so infection was common. Over the past 20 years, domestic herds were frequently infected but possum control undertaken during this period succeeded in suppressing infected herd numbers.
We completed ground control to erradicate possums in:
We carried out ferret surveys in:
We completed aerial operations in 2017 and 2018.
There are currently no infected herd in the Pisa TMA.
We plan our pest control operations up to 3 years in advance. The current year runs from July 2021 to June 2022.
Dates and control methods for pest control operations in the Pisa TMA are provisional and subject to change. If you’re affected by any upcoming operations, our pest control contractors will contact you before work begins. They will:
