Eradicating bovine TB in NZ
As part of our TBfree programme we deliver our pest control operations through a framework of TB management areas (TMAs). TMAs are areas with known TB infection in livestock or wildlife. Each TMA has a specific TB control plan designed to eradicate TB as effectively as possible.
The Akatore Tokomairiro Kaitangata TMA
The Akatore Tokomairiro Kaitangata TMA covers over 41,200 hectares of coastal Otago forest. It lies east of State Highway 1 between Waihola, Kaitangata, Lake Tuakitoto and Milton out to the Pacific Ocean.
Topography is generally flat but with steep gullies. The habitat includes scrubby gorse-filled gullies and vast stretches of native bush and pinus plantations. This is interspersed with lowland farmland, lifestyle blocks, and coastal communities.
TB was firmly established in wildlife in the Akatore Tokomairiro area with many herds infected during the 1990–2000 period.
We completed ground control operations in:
- Akatore, Brighton, Lake Tuakitoto and Tokomairiro-Kaitangata areas in 2014/2015
- the Brighton area, Lake Tuakitoto and Tokomairiro-Kaitangata operational blocks in 2016
- the Akatore operational block in 2011/2012.
We completed pig and ferret surveys in the Akatore Tokomairiro area during 2017/2018.
Current state
As of June 2023, there are no infected herds in the Akatore Tokomairiro Kaitangata TMA.
Future pest control operations
We plan our pest control operations up to 3 years in advance. The current year runs from July 2023 to June 2024.
