Is possum sterilisation possible?

We are in conversation with University of Canterbury researcher Rudi Marquez-Mazlin, who recently highlighted a compound that could be used to sterilise possums.

A possum crouching on the branch of a treeResearcher Rudi Marquez-Mazlin, at the University of Canterbury, has gained public attention for a new approach to pest control — chemical sterilisation using a compound.

This development could significantly enhance our possum control programme. However, we would need to consider some challenges, such as integrating the compound into palatable bait, before we could add it to our toolbox for eradicating TB.

We have met with Rudi, and although we have made good progress, there is still a way to go. We'll remain in contact with the university and will be very keen to collaborate further.
