NAIT tag and slaughter levy rates for cattle will increase on 1 September 2026, following consultation with industry and careful consideration by the OSPRI Board.
Consultation on proposed changes to the levies that help fund the National Animal Identification and Tracing (NAIT) Scheme closed on Thursday 23 July 2026. Feedback showed mixed views, including support for continued investment in NAIT and concerns about affordability, delivery confidence and governance.
After reviewing submissions, the OSPRI Board confirmed the need for further funding to modernise NAIT and maintain effective biosecurity and traceability across New Zealand.
From 1 September 2026, the new NAIT cattle levy rates will be $1.35 for cattle tags and $1.91 for slaughter.
The Board appreciated everybody’s feedback. It has is confidence in OSPRI’s ability to manage delivery of the NAIT technology programme, with the new system to be built by an experienced specialist.
