How to create a livestock movement

Use this step-by-step guide to record movements in the NAIT system whenever an animal moves on or off your farm.

To record a movement in the NAIT system you will need to know the following.

  • Your NAIT number.
  • The NAIT number of the sender or receiver.
  • The date the animals moved.
  • The individual RFID tag numbers of the animals that have moved.

If an animal has been declared dead in error, it can’t be recorded in a movement.

To create a movement from your homepage, follow the steps below.

  1. 1 Log into your NAIT account.
  2. 2 From your home page, select Create movement.
  3. 3 Select if you are creating a sending or receiving movement.
  4. 4 Enter the other NAIT number and the date that the movement took place.
  5. 5 Select Continue.
  6. 6 Enter the RFID numbers using one of the following methods.

Option 1: Select the animals from your list of registered animals

  1. 1 As the sending PICA, select the animals from your registered animals list by choosing Select from a list of animals registered to your NAIT number.
  2. 2 View your registered animals list displayed.
  3. 3 Use search and filtering options to choose the animals you intend to send.
  4. 4 After selecting the animals, click Continue at the bottom of the page.
  5. 5 Proceed by selecting Create movement, and review the summary of the recorded movement provided.
  6. 6 Upon completion of these steps, your obligations for this movement are fulfilled. The movement is now awaiting confirmation from the receiver.

Alternatively, you can also create a sending movement from your Registered animals page directly.

  1. Navigate to your Registered animals page by clicking on your NAIT number from your home page.
  2. Use the filter and search options to select the individual animals you intend to send.
  3. Select Create movement followed by Sending movement.
  4. Follow the subsequent steps to create the sending movement.

Option 2: Type in the tag details

If you are the receiving PICA or if the animals you are sending are not in your registered animals list yet, you can type in the RFID numbers manually. This is ideal when moving a smaller number of animals.

  1. 1 Select Type in visual ID or RFID to enter the RFID tag numbers.
  2. 2 Follow the formatting guidelines on the right side of the page.
  3. 3 After entering the tag numbers, select Continue at the bottom of the page.
  4. 4 Select Create movement.
  5. 5 Review the recorded movement summary.
  6. 6 You have completed your obligations for this movement and it is now pending confirmation by the other PICA.

Option 3: Upload a file with the tag numbers

If you have scanned the animals or have a file saved on your computer that contains the RFID numbers of the animals in the movement you may choose to upload the RFID numbers into NAIT directly. This is an ideal solution for larger movements where it is not easy to manually type or select each RFID number individually.

  1. 1 Choose Upload a file with tag numbers to initiate the process.
  2. 2 Select a file from your computer that contains the tag numbers to be uploaded.Ensure the file is in the correct format for the NAIT system.
  3. 3 After uploading the file, select Create movement.
  4. 4 Review the summary of the recorded movement displayed.
  5. 5 Your obligations for this movement are fulfilled once completed. The movement is now pending confirmation by the other PICA.

In this guide, we will go through recording a sending movement in the NAIT system.

Starting on the NAIT home screen, select Create movement from the list of options at the top of your screen. You can choose which direction of movement you’d like to make. We’ll select Sending for animals leaving your location. Here, you will need to provide the NAIT number of the location the animals are going to and the date the animals physically moved. You can either type in the NAIT number, search for one or select from a list of NAIT numbers you’ve previously made movements to.

After pressing Continue, you need to provide the NAIT tag numbers of all the animals that are moving. You can either type them in or select from animals registered to your NAIT number. We’ll choose to type them in. Type them into the text box, making sure to separate each tag number with either a comma or by entering it on a new line.

After you press Continue, the system will validate the tags and let you know if there are any issues like unregistered animals or invalid tags. Once you press Create movement, the system will show a green box at the top of the screen if the movement was successful. After that, you’re good to go.

Please remember — all movements, sending and receiving, need to be recorded in the NAIT system within 48 hours of the end of the day the animals physically moved. Thank you for supporting traceability and disease management in New Zealand.

In this tutorial we will create a receiving movement. You should create a receiving movement when animals have arrived on your property and a movement has not yet been created by the sender.

After logging into NAIT, click Create movement, then Receiving movement. Now, enter the NAIT number you have received the animals from, and the date they have moved. Next you need to select the animals you want to include in the movement. If you have a file with the tag numbers you can upload the file by clicking here.

For this tutorial we will type the tag numbers in manually. Click here, then type in each tag number. You can use either the visual ID printed on the tag or the RFID. Remember to separate multiple tags with a comma. Then click continue and check that the information you've entered is correct. If so, click Create movement and you're done. Easy!

The farmer who sent the animals to you will receive a notification asking them to confirm the movement you just created.

In this guide, we will go through confirming movements in the NAIT system.

Starting on the NAIT home screen, there will be a yellow box on your NAIT number if you have movements pending your review. Select the blue link to be taken to the list of movements needing confirmation.

The receiving tab shows animals that another Person in Charge of Animals, or PICA, has sent to you, waiting for you to confirm receipt of them. Select View and confirm to be taken to the details of the movement. Check the details look correct — the sending NAIT number, the date of the movement, and that all the NAIT tag numbers are there.

If the movement is correct, select the Yes beside each of the tag numbers to say you did receive them. If any of the animals are incorrect, you can select No. This will require you to provide a reason for rejecting the animal. Select the arrow to see the dropdown list of reasons for rejection.

Once you're happy with the movement, select Save to confirm the details above. The system will show a green box if the confirmation was successful.

You can also select Show these animals to take you to the list of your now registered animals.

Back under your action required movements, the sending tab shows animals that another PICA has received from you, waiting for you to confirm you sent them. Select Review pending movement to be taken to the details of the movement. Check the details look correct — the sending NAIT number, the date of the movement, and that all the NAIT tag numbers are there. If the details look incorrect, you can choose to deny the movement and select a reason for denial. If you're happy with the movement and the details are as you know them to be correct, you can select Record matching movement.

The system will auto-fill the details for you so you can press Continue or update any areas that may need it. Once you press Continue, the system will show a yellow box if there are any warnings for the movement. The system will tell you that the animal is not at the NAIT number the movement is being created for. This is because the NAIT system updates an animal's location when someone creates a receiving movement for it.

You can ignore this message and press Create movement. The system will show you a green box if the movement was successful and you're all good to go.

Please remember — all movements, sending and receiving, need to be recorded in the NAIT system within 48 hours of the end of the day the animals physically moved. Thank you for supporting traceability and disease management in New Zealand.
