How to record an exempt animal movement

Find out how to use a CSV file to upload exempt animal movement records to the NAIT system.

Preparing the CSV file

Your CSV file must include all of the column headings, in the correct order. This includes headings for optional columns you are leaving blank.

How to complete each column

Enter the NAIT number of the entity sending the animal.

Enter NAIT number of the entity receiving the animal.

  • For fallow deer, enter FD.
  • For trophy deer, enter TD.

The number of exempt animals in the movement (between 1 and 500).

  • This field allows you to type up to 500 characters.
  • Enter details of the exempt animal in the movement.
  • You must include breed, gender, and approximate age.

You can choose to enter a reference number of your own — for example 1, 2, 3, 4. This makes it easier to identify which record (row of your spreadsheet) is incorrect if you make a mistake in your CSV.

Only complete this column if you are sending the animal from your NAIT number.

  • You can enter only one date per animal sent.
  • The date may be up to four days in advance.
  • Date must be in a recognisable format — for example:
    • dd/mm/yyyy
    • dd/mm/yyyy hh:mm:ss
    • yyyy-mm-dd.

Please note any time component will not be stored in the database.

In this guide, we will go through recording an exempt animal movement in the NAIT system.

This is for animals who are exempt from the obligations to tag and register them — unsafe-to-tag animals. Animals that are unsafe to tag can only move to a meat processor, game estate, safari park or zoo. While they aren't required to be tagged and registered, a movement still needs to be declared in the NAIT system.

Starting on the NAIT home screen, select Create movement from the links at the top of the screen. This will take you to the screen where you can choose which movement direction you'd like to make. We'll make a sending movement for animals leaving your location.

Here, you will need to provide the NAIT number of the location the animals are moving to, and the date the animals will physically move. You can either type the NAIT number in, search for it, or select from a list of NAIT numbers you've previously recorded movements to.

If the animals are moving to a meat processor, the system will warn you that movements to accredited meat processors do not need to be recorded by PICAs. However, you can select Create exempt movement to let the system know this is for unsafe-to-tag animals.

Once you press Continue, the system will do some checks to ensure you intend to create a movement for animals exempt from tagging. Have a read through and then select Yes.

You will need to provide a few details for the animals that are moving. Choose the category of animal, the number of animals moving, and their details, including gender, breed and approximate age. Then choose Continue. Once you select Create movement, the system will verify the movement and show you a green box if it was successful. After that, you're good to go.

Please remember — all movements, sending and receiving, need to be recorded in the NAIT system within 48 hours of the end of the day the animals physically moved. Thank you for supporting traceability and disease management in New Zealand.
