As part of our TBfree programme we deliver our pest control operations through a framework of TB management areas (TMAs). TMAs are areas with known TB infection in livestock and wildlife. Each TMA has a specific TB control plan designed to eradicate TB as effectively as possible.
The Nevis TMA covers 62,000 ha centred around the Nevis River catchment and extends the entire length of the Nevis Valley.
The landscape varies from flat to mountainous and is comprised of a mixture of tussock and scrub, together with high altitude areas of rock and scree with little possum habitat.
TB infection was found in wildlife in the lower reaches of the Nevis Valley, and the surrounding Gibbston Flats, for many years and persists today. Ferrets inhabit this area and infection is common.
We undertook possum control in the Horn Range block during 2018/2019 and 2019/2020.
Ferret surveys were completed in:
There are currently no infected herds in the Nevis TMA.
We plan our pest control operations up to 3 years in advance. The current year runs from July 2021 to June 2022.
Dates and control methods for pest control operations in the Nevis TMA are provisional and subject to change. If you’re affected by any upcoming operations, our pest control contractors will contact you before work begins. They will:
