Eradicating bovine TB in NZ

As part of our TBfree programme we deliver our pest control operations through a framework of TB management areas (TMAs). TMAs are areas with known TB infection in livestock and wildlife. Each TMA has a specific TB control plan designed to eradicate TB as effectively as possible.

The Western Southland TMA covers 131,490 ha and is centred around the southern Takitimu Mountains.

There is a central core of rugged mountainous peaks with river valleys and extensive tracts of exotic and native bush. Outside these areas there is a concentration of intensive farming on highly developed and improved land.

History of TB and pest control in the Western Southland TMA

TB has been found in wildlife in parts of Western Southland for many years, with the most recent case being found in 2015 following a spike of TB infection in cattle near Takitimu. The focus of our work in this TMA remains on controlling wildlife to prevent further infection in cattle.

We have carried out ground-based possum control throughout most of the Western Southland TMA including:

  • the Blackmount, Sharpridge, Twinlaw, Wairaki, Wether Hill, and Woodlaw blocks in 2017/2018, and
  • the Letham, Mount Linton, Wairaki, and Wether Hills areas during 2018/2019.

We completed ferret surveys in:

  • the Blackmount, Dunrobin, Gowan Hill, Letham, Mangapiri, Mount Linton, Nightcaps, Opio, Sharpridge, Twinlaw, Wairaki, Wether Hill and Woodlaw areas in 2018/2019, nad
  • the Dunrobin, Black Mount, Gowan Hill, Letham, Mangapiri, Mount Linton, Nightcaps, Opio, Sharpridge, Twinlaw, Wairaki, Wether Hill and Woodlaw in 2019/2020.

We also undertook a pig survey in Western Southland during 2019/2020.

Current state

There are currently no infected herds in the Western Southland TMA.
