As part of our TBfree programme we deliver our pest control operations through a framework of TB management areas (TMAs). TMAs are areas with known TB infection in livestock and wildlife. Each TMA has a specific TB control plan designed to eradicate TB as effectively as possible.
This TMA is in the Waikato region, south of the Napier-Taupō Road (SH5) on the north eastern edge of Lake Taupō.
The TMA extends south down the shores of Lake Taupō, from Taupō township to the Hatepe village. The farmland of Taharua area is the eastern boundary, and the northern boundary extends to Iwitahi on SH5.
Most of the habitat is commercial pine forest.
We’ve found many TB infected pigs, and a TB infected ferret, in the East Taupō TMA over the years. We've been doing regular possum control operations in the area since the early 2000s. This has:
In 2016 we completed aerial control of possums in both East Taupō (Te Arero) and East Taupō (Waitahanui). During this operation, sensitive areas close to Lake Taupō and Waitahanui received ground-based control using both bait stations and trapping methods.
There are no infected herds within the TMA, but infected wildlife is present in surrounding TMAs — in the Hatepe and Turangi areas, south of east Taupō.
We plan our pest control operations up to 3 years in advance. The current year runs from July 2021 to June 2022.
Dates and control methods for pest control operations in East Taupō are provisional and subject to change. If you’re affected by any upcoming operations, our pest control contractors will contact you before work begins. They will:
