Eradicating bovine TB in NZ

As part of our TBfree programme we deliver our pest control operations through a framework of TB management areas (TMAs). TMAs are areas with known TB infection in livestock and wildlife. Each TMA has a specific TB control plan designed to eradicate TB as effectively as possible.

The Tūrangi TMA is in the southern part of the Waikato region. The geographical features that define this TMA are:

  • Lake Taupō in the north
  • the Kaimanawa Ranges in the southeast, and
  • Lake Otomangakau to the west.

History of TB and pest control in Tūrangi

The Tūrangi TMA has a long history with TB infection in both cattle herds and local wildlife. TB has been found in the wild animal population in possums, ferrets and pigs. Most recently, we identified a TB infected pig in 2015.

Previous possum control and livestock disease management has reduced the number of infected herds in the Waikato region. However, our monitoring has shown that we need to do further control work in the Tūrangi area to reduce the possum population. This will:

  • minimise the risk of the disease spreading through wild animal populations into farmed cattle and deer
  • ensure further good progress towards eradicating TB.

Possum control began in the Tūrangi TMA in the 1990s and is still ongoing. Regular aerial control over the last 10 years has been the main control method for this TMA. The most recent aerial control operation was the Pihanga-Kakaramea operation which was split into 2 blocks.

  • The northern section received control in late 2018.
  • We completed aerial control in the southern section in early 2019.

We last did aerial control in the Umukarikari area in 2017. The ground control in the Tūrangi TMA has focused on the 9,400ha of farmland in the TMA. Regular control operations in this area has used a mix of trapping and bait station methods.

Current state

Infected herds were previously present in the Tūrangi area, but there are no infected herds within the TMA now.

Future pest control operations

We plan our pest control operations up to 3 years in advance. The current year runs from July 2021 to June 2022.
