Animals you must record a movement for

Only some animals need to be recorded in NAIT when they move from 1 NAIT location to another. These are:

  • cattle, except bobby calves
  • deer (record an exempt animal movement for fallow deer and trophy stags).

Who records animal movements

The Person in Charge of Animals (PICA) sending the animals is responsible for recording a sending movement in NAIT. The PICA receiving the animals is responsible for recording a receiving movement.

All animal movements between NAIT locations must be recorded, even if:

  • there has been no change of ownership — for example, you move them for grazing or mating
  • the animals are exempt from tagging.

When to record a movement

All movements of NAIT animals to and from a registered NAIT location must be recorded in NAIT within 48 hours of the animals leaving a property or arriving at a new location. For example, if an animal arrives on a Monday, the movement must be recorded by 11.59pm Wednesday. This includes short-term movements such as grazing, mating, events and the sale of animals.

When you don't need to record a movement

You don't need to record a movement if you're moving animals between properties with the same NAIT location number.

Chatham Islands movement exemption

You also don't need to declare movement of NAIT animals between NAIT locations on the Chatham Islands.

All animals must still be tagged and registered, except for wild cattle that are not farmed or kept in captivity.

Animals sent to or from the islands must have their movement recorded in NAIT. If wild cattle are mustered and sent from the island, they must be tagged and registered before being moved — unless they meet the conditions of the unsafe to tag exemption and are sent direct to a meat processor.

Why it's important to record movements

Up-to-date information in NAIT means we can reduce the:

  • time it takes to control disease outbreaks
  • number of affected farms
  • risk to your livelihood, as we can confidently reassure domestic and export markets about the control of disease.

Information you need to record a movement

To record a movement, you need:

  • your NAIT location number
  • the NAIT location number of the other property
  • the date the animals left, or arrived at your property
  • the individual NAIT RFID or visual ID tag numbers of the animals that have moved.

Sending animals off your farm

As well as a movement in NAIT, you must complete an Animal Status Declaration (ASD) when you send animals off your farm.

All NAIT animals must be tagged and registered before moving to a different NAIT location, although there are some exceptions.

Sending animals with a livestock transporter

Your livestock transporter may ask for a Declaration to Livestock Transporter (DLT) form confirming all animals are NAIT compliant before they will transport them. The DLT form is available at the bottom of your paper ASD or electronically via MyOSPRI's ASD function.

TB testing

Some animals may need a TB test before they are moved.

In some cases, cattle may need to be tested again after they are moved.

How to record a movement

Our NAIT user guides explain how to create and manage movements in NAIT. You can also call our Support Centre for help on 0800 482 463.

If you want to withhold personal information

When you record a NAIT movement, your full name, NAIT number and property name are displayed to the other PICA who is sending or receiving the animals. You can control whether your name appears to other PICAs in movements and search results.

We’ve made a major investment in this disease. We’ve all worked hard. There’s more and more things in place as we improve NAIT. You can see where stock have been, what treatments they’ve had, and so you’ve got more information when you’re purchasing stock. We’ve all got our part ot play — be it supporting the programmes that are in place to eradicate TB in the wildlife, and by not purchasing stock from where you shouldn’t. I think M. Bovis has helped with people’s understanding of what NAIT is about. For NAIT to work we’re the ones that are responsible. We own the animals — they’re our animals — so we’ve got to tag them, we’ve got to record that tag and then we’ve got to record the movement of the animal. And only we can do it.

Next you need to select the animals you want to include in the movement. If you have a file with the tag numbers you can upload the file by clicking here.

For this tutorial we will type the tag numbers in manually. Click here, then type in each tag number.,You can use either the visual ID printed on the tag or the RFID. Remember to separate multiple tags with a comma. Then click continue and check that the information you've entered is correct. If so, click 'Create movement' and you're done. Easy!
