As part of our TBfree programme we deliver our pest control operations through a framework of TB management areas (TMAs). TMAs are areas with known TB infection in livestock and wildlife. Each TMA has a specific TB control plan designed to eradicate TB as effectively as possible.
The Bay of Plenty TMA covers 60,773 hectares. It's located in the south-eastern area of the Bay of Plenty region, and stretches from the Kaingaroa forest in the west, to the Whirinaki/Te Urewera forests in the east. The northernmost tip includes Taupiri mountain and the head waters of the Wheao, Rangitaiki and Waione rivers. The southern boundary is Lochinver Station. From Lochinver, the boundary travels north again across SH5 to include the Matea farmland and Ngapuketurua forest.
We've seen sporadic TB infection in domestic herds in this TMA over the past 20 years. We've found TB-infected pigs and ferrets within the Bay of Plenty TMA — we found a ferret in the Lochinver area in 2006 and a pig in 2008.
Possum control in the Bay of Plenty TMA has kept the possum population low over the past 10 years, and has prevented TB from migrating out of the uncontrolled land to the south. We also completed ground control operations through Matea and Lochinver in the 2020/2021 year.
In 2017 we completed aerial control operations in Iwitahi, Ngapuketurua and Waione, along with the neighbouring Kokomoka and Whirinaki areas. Early indications show these operations were highly successful.
There are no infected herds in Bay of Plenty.
We plan our pest control operations up to 3 years in advance. The current year runs from July 2021 to June 2022.
Dates and control methods for pest control operations in Bay of Plenty are provisional and subject to change. If you’re affected by any upcoming operations, our pest control contractors will contact you before work begins. They will:
Type of control | When | Coverage | Where |
---|---|---|---|
Aerial control | 2021/2022 | 880ha | Matea |
Ground control | 2021/2022 | 11,180ha | Matea |
Ground control | 2022/2023 | 10,147ha | Matea, Lochinver |
