As part of our TBfree programme we deliver our pest control operations through a framework of TB management areas (TMAs). TMAs are areas with known TB infection in livestock or wildlife. Each TMA has a specific TB control plan designed to eradicate TB as effectively as possible.
The Catlins TMA covers over 230,000 hectares. It is situated near the south-eastern corner of the South Island, spanning both the Otago and Southland regions.
The area has rolling hills, a mix of valuable native forests in low-lying regions, and extensive sections of exotic forests, scrubland, and improved farmland.
This area has a central core made up of the Catlins and Chaslands Forests. Surrounding this core is an outer ring that includes different amounts of improved farmland, scrubland, and bush.
TB has been spreading among wildlife in various parts of the Catlins TMA since the early 1980s. During the peak of TB infection in the 1980s, there were up to 100 infected herds in this area at one time.
In 2018/2019, we completed ground control operations in the Chaslands, Hinahina, Owaka 1, Slopedown South, Tahakopa, Mouseback, Progress Valley and Waikawa areas.
We completed:
We completed aerial possum control in the Chaslands Catlins, and Mouseback areas during 2013/2014.
As of June 2023, there are no infected herds in the Catlins Otago and Southland TMA.
We plan our pest control operations up to 3 years in advance. The current year runs from July 2023 to June 2024.
Dates and control methods for pest control operations in Catlins Otago and Southland are provisional. If you’re affected by any upcoming operations, our pest control contractors will contact you before work begins. They will:
