As part of our TBfree programme we deliver our pest control operations through a framework of TB management areas (TMAs). TMAs are areas with known TB infection in livestock or wildlife. Each TMA has a specific TB control plan designed to eradicate TB as effectively as possible.
The Roxburgh TMA covers over 6,600 hectares. It is situated on the true right bank of the Clutha River and is centred close to the Roxburgh hydro power station. The habitat consists of highland grasslands, scrubland, and patches of land that have been improved and intensively farmed. The margins of Clutha River are dotted with fruit orchards.
TB infection has been prevalent in the Roxburgh TMA since the early 1980s. There have been many TB breakdowns in the herds in the mid-1990s. The last infection in this TMA was in 2004.
We completed ground-based possum control in the Ettrick and Roxburgh areas in 2017/2018.
We completed ferret surveys in Roxburgh and Ettrick in 2018/2019.
As of June 2023, there are no infected herds in the Roxburgh TMA.
We plan our pest control operations up to 3 years in advance. The current year runs from July 2023 to June 2024.
Dates and control methods for pest control operations in Roxburgh are provisional. If you’re affected by any upcoming operations, our pest control contractors will contact you before work begins. They will:
Type of control | When | Coverage | Where |
---|---|---|---|
Ferret survey | 2023/2024 | 2,000ha | Roxburgh |
Ferret survey | 2024/2025 | 2,000ha | Roxburgh |
The proposed areas for wildlife surveillance are marked in blue.
